How to get your product feed live on OpenAI Ads

If you’re an ecommerce brand and already run a Google Shopping feed, getting listed on OpenAI Ads is mostly a delivery problem. The feed spec is the same, only the destination changes.

At a glance

  • The feed spec matches Google Shopping, so an existing feed usually needs no rebuilding.
  • Delivery is SFTP only, with fresh credentials generated per feed inside Ads Manager.
  • Accepted formats are CSV, TSV, JSONL, or Parquet.
  • Updates go live automatically once a new file lands, no manual republish step.
  • Service businesses can skip this entirely, it only applies if you’re selling physical products.

How do you create the feed?

  1. In Ads Manager, go to Tools > Feeds > + Create Feed.
  2. Name the feed and choose SFTP as the upload method.
  3. The platform generates a fresh set of SFTP credentials for that feed alone.

Where do you actually send the file?

  • Host: sftp.commerce.openai.com
  • Username: auto-generated and shown in Ads Manager once the feed is created
  • Upload path: root only (/), no subfolders, the container is flat
  • Port: 443
  • Authentication: by password (generated in Ads Manager) or SSH key

What fields does the feed actually need?

  • id: a unique product identifier, e.g. SKU-12345
  • title: the product name, up to 150 characters, e.g. Blue Linen Shirt
  • description: up to 5,000 characters, e.g. 100% linen, relaxed fit
  • link: the URL to the product page
  • image_link: the URL to the main product image
  • price: with currency code, e.g. 49.99 GBP
  • availability: in_stock or out_of_stock
  • brand: the brand name
  • condition: new, used, or refurbished

What file formats work, and how often does it update?

Files can be CSV, TSV, JSONL, or Parquet, and updates trigger automatically the moment a new file lands, with no manual republish step needed. Already running a feed tool like DataFeedWatch or Channable? Add this SFTP destination alongside the ones you already have live.

Final takeaway: Of everything involved in setting up OpenAI Ads, the product feed is usually the lightest lift, since it’s reusing infrastructure most ecommerce brands already built for Shopping ads. The real decisions you need to focus on are setting the right bidding strategy (see our recent article) and pixel implementation (guidance coming soon!).
