Photocrowd: Finding new stock through smart campaign expansion

BACKGROUND

  • Founded in 2012 by Mike Betts, Photocrowd offers daily contests across a wide range of themes, allowing participants to refine their skills, receive peer and expert reviews, and earn recognition or prizes.
  • For most of our partnership, our paid search strategy had focused on contest/competition related keywords. This has driven stable growth, but we challenged ourselves to find new audiences to expand into.
  • There were complications that blocked our path to expansion. Other high intent keyword spaces were extremely expensive, and those that were affordable appeared low intent in nature.

SOLUTION

  • Smart Expansion
  • Our regular search query report analysis highlighted a small amount of conversions coming through stock photo related terms.
  • These weren’t part of our core targeting, but we developed a testing hypothesis designed around targeting these terms and the companies offering such services.
  • Once the foundations were in place, we’ve helped them expand their investments to achieve great performance.
